condition

Dry Socket (Alveolar Osteitis)

Definition

A painful complication 2–4 days after tooth extraction when the blood clot dislodges, exposing bone. Affects 2–5% of extractions.

In detail

Most common after lower wisdom tooth extractions. Risk factors: smoking, straw use, vigorous rinsing. Treatment is a medicated dressing placed in the socket — relief within minutes. Prevention: no smoking 48 hours, no straws, gentle rinsing after 24 hours.
