Advanced gum disease affecting the bone around teeth. Not reversible, but progression can be stopped with treatment.

Signs: gum pockets over 4 mm, bleeding, bone loss on x-ray, possible tooth mobility. Treatment: scaling and root planing, sometimes surgery. Lifetime maintenance (every 3 months) required. Linked to heart disease and diabetes.
