Periodontal Ligament

Definition

The thin ligament of fibres that attaches each tooth root to the surrounding jawbone. Allows slight tooth movement.

In detail

Provides proprioception (awareness of bite force) and acts as a shock absorber during chewing. Orthodontic tooth movement works by gradually remodeling this ligament. Implants have no ligament, which is one reason they feel different from natural teeth.
