Dentin

Definition

The hard tissue just beneath the enamel. Contains microscopic tubules connecting to the tooth's nerve, causing sensitivity when exposed.

In detail

Dentin is yellowish and softer than enamel. When enamel wears or gums recede, exposed dentin causes sensitivity to cold, sweet, and acid. Dentin forms slowly throughout life and can remineralise with fluoride.
