Hardened plaque that forms on teeth over time. Cannot be removed by brushing — requires professional scaling.
In detail
Plaque mineralises into calculus within 24–72 hours. It attaches firmly to enamel and provides a rough surface where new plaque accumulates rapidly. Supragingival (above gum) calculus is cosmetic; subgingival (below gum) calculus causes gum disease.
