Sinus Lift: What the Procedure Actually Involves

A sinus lift creates bone space for upper back-tooth implants. Here's what happens and how long recovery takes.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Rashid

Medical Director

Why needed

Upper back teeth sit close to the sinus cavity. When bone is thin, a sinus lift adds graft material to create space for implants.

Two techniques

Internal (crestal)

  • For smaller lifts (2–4 mm)
  • Done through the implant hole
  • Quick, minimal swelling
  • AED 3,500–5,500

Lateral window

  • For larger lifts (4–10 mm)
  • Window in the side wall of the sinus
  • More invasive, more healing
  • AED 6,000–9,000

Recovery

  • 4–7 days mild discomfort
  • No nose blowing for 2 weeks
  • Sneeze with mouth open
  • 4–6 months before implant placement (for lateral window)

Success rate

95–97% — highly predictable.
