What You Can (and Can't) Eat After Getting Veneers

First 48 hours need soft food. Long-term, you can eat almost anything — with a few exceptions.

Dr. Sofia Petrova

Lead Cosmetic Dentist

First 48 hours

  • Soft foods only: soup, yoghurt, mashed potatoes, pasta, scrambled eggs, smoothies
  • Avoid very hot or very cold (bonding is still setting)
  • No alcohol for 24 hours (can affect bonding setting)

First week

  • Resume normal eating gradually
  • Chew on opposite side where possible
  • Avoid sticky foods (caramel, hard toffee) that could pull at the veneer

Long-term rules

  • No biting directly into whole apples, corn on the cob, crusty bread — cut first
  • No ice, pen caps, fingernails, bottle caps
  • Coffee, tea, wine, curry: fine, but rinse with water after

Foods that stain composite (not porcelain)

If you have composite veneers, limit:

  • Red wine
  • Coffee (or add milk)
  • Dark curries
  • Turmeric

Porcelain veneers don't stain at all.

The reality

Porcelain veneers let you enjoy almost any food. The restrictions are about biting force and habit, not flavours.
