Zoom vs Laser Whitening: Which Is Better?

Both use hydrogen peroxide. The difference is the activation source. Here's what actually changes in results, speed, and sensitivity.

What both systems have in common

Both Zoom (Philips) and laser-activated whitening systems use a hydrogen peroxide gel — typically 25–35% concentration — applied to the tooth surface. The gel releases oxygen free radicals that break down stain molecules inside the enamel.

The activation source (light or laser) helps accelerate the peroxide reaction. Crucially: modern evidence suggests the activation light contributes less to the final whitening result than originally marketed — the gel itself is doing most of the work.

Zoom (LED-activated)

  • Uses a blue LED light at 465 nm
  • Typical session: 3 × 15 min cycles (total ~60 min)
  • Gel: 25% hydrogen peroxide
  • Pros: Gentle warmth, very tolerable, widely available
  • Cons: Slightly slower than diode laser

Laser whitening (diode laser)

  • Uses a 810–980 nm diode laser to activate the gel
  • Typical session: 2 × 20 min cycles (total ~45 min)
  • Gel: 30–40% hydrogen peroxide
  • Pros: Faster, potentially higher peak whiteness in one visit
  • Cons: Slightly more sensitivity, more operator skill required

Which one gets better results?

In the long run, very little difference. At 6 months post-treatment, both systems give equivalent shade retention in randomised trials. The peak whiteness right after the session can be 0.5–1 shade brighter with laser, but this evens out as rebound occurs over 1–2 weeks.

Sensitivity

  • Zoom: 35–50% of patients report transient sensitivity
  • Laser: 40–60% report transient sensitivity

Both settle in 24–72 hours. A pre-treatment desensitising protocol (Sensodyne for 2 weeks + fluoride varnish post-treatment) reduces both rates.

Cost in Dubai

Usually priced similarly: AED 1,800–3,500 for a single session. Some clinics charge a premium for laser (AED 500–800 more).

The more important variable

More important than the activation source is:

  1. Gel concentration and brand — Philips Zoom, Opalescence Boost, and Sapphire are all premium
  2. Gum isolation quality — proper damming prevents gum burns
  3. Pre-treatment shade record — so you can objectively measure the change
  4. Post-treatment fluoride — to lock in results and reduce sensitivity

If a clinic delivers all four, the specific activation technology matters less.
