Veneers for Yellow Teeth: When Whitening Fails

If your teeth are deeply yellow from genetics, tetracycline, or age, veneers are often the only reliable cosmetic fix. Here's what to expect.

When whitening isn't enough

Whitening works on surface and mild intrinsic staining. It's less effective for:

  • Tetracycline or other drug-induced grey-brown staining
  • Fluorosis (mottled patches)
  • Deep yellow from thin enamel showing dentin
  • Aged teeth where whitening plateaus after 2 shades

In these cases, porcelain veneers cover the yellow underneath and deliver a stable, bright result.

The process

  • Whiten any naturally-showing teeth first so the veneer shade matches the final bright baseline
  • Choose a shade (BL1–BL3 for whitest; A1–B1 for natural-bright)
  • Place veneers over prepared tooth structure

Shade matching for yellow teeth

If underlying teeth are very dark, the veneer needs to be slightly thicker or slightly more opaque to mask the darkness. This trades some translucency for coverage — a good ceramist balances this carefully.

Cost in Dubai

Porcelain veneers: AED 2,500–6,000 per tooth. Most Hollywood smile cases for deeply yellow teeth involve 8–10 upper veneers, totalling AED 25,000–60,000.

Alternatives to consider

  • Composite veneers: cheaper but less stain-resistant (AED 900–1,800 per tooth)
  • Internal bleaching: only for single non-vital tooth
  • Zoom whitening + touch-up: worth trying first if you haven't
