How Veneers Are Removed Safely

Veneers can be removed without damaging the underlying tooth when done carefully. Here's the procedure.

Dr. Sofia Petrova

Lead Cosmetic Dentist

When removal is needed

  • Veneer failed (chipped, cracked)
  • Decay at the margin
  • Patient wants redesign
  • Gum recession exposing the prep line

The procedure

  • Fine diamond bur removes the veneer in layers
  • Underlying tooth shape preserved
  • New veneer fits on the same prep
  • Typically 15–30 minutes per veneer

Risks

  • Very small enamel loss during removal (0.1 mm)
  • Minor bleeding if margin very close to gum
  • Sensitivity for 1–2 weeks after

Cost

  • Removal only: AED 500–1,000 per veneer
  • Usually included in replacement cost

Is it reversible?

The underlying prepared tooth is not reversible to fully natural — but the prep is usually minimal enough that a new veneer fits over it indefinitely.
