Replacing Old Veneers: What to Expect

Porcelain veneers last 15–20 years. When they need replacement, the process is more predictable than the first time. Here's how it works.

When replacement is needed

  • Visible chip or fracture
  • Decay at the veneer margin
  • Gum recession exposing the original prep line
  • Shade change with time (rare for porcelain)
  • Patient desire for updated design

The process

  • Old veneers are removed atraumatically with fine burs
  • Underlying tooth is evaluated and any decay treated
  • New veneers designed — often with the benefit of current photos and the patient's input
  • Placed over 1–2 visits

Usually less aggressive the second time

The first veneer removed some enamel. Replacement veneers fit on the existing prep surface — typically no additional tooth is removed unless there's decay.

Cost

Slightly lower than first-time veneers (no digital smile design required usually):

  • Porcelain replacement: AED 2,200–5,500 per tooth
  • Composite replacement: AED 800–1,500 per tooth

The design upgrade opportunity

Replacement is a chance to refine what you liked or didn't love. Share feedback:

  • Too long / too short?
  • Shade too bright or too natural?
  • Shape changes?
  • Better translucency?
