DHA Licensing: What Every Patient Should Verify

All Dubai dentists must be DHA-licensed. Here's how to check — and what else matters beyond the license.

What DHA licensing means

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) regulates all medical practitioners in Dubai. A DHA license confirms a dentist has:

  • Completed dental education to recognised standards
  • Passed DHA's verification and exam requirements
  • Registered with the UAE health regulatory body
  • Agreed to standards of professional conduct

No dental clinic in Dubai can legally operate without DHA licensing.

How to verify a dentist's license

  1. Go to the DHA website (www.dha.gov.ae)
  2. Search "DHA Sheryan" (the health professional registration system)
  3. Enter the dentist's name
  4. Verify active license status and specialty

Most clinics display DHA license numbers prominently in the reception or on the website. Ask to see it if you don't.

What DHA doesn't guarantee

DHA licensing is a minimum standard. It confirms the dentist is qualified to practice — it doesn't tell you:

  • Experience level
  • Specialist training (unless explicitly listed)
  • Case portfolio quality
  • Patient communication style
  • Clinic hygiene standards

These matter separately.

Specialties recognised by DHA

  • General Dentistry
  • Endodontics
  • Orthodontics
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Periodontics
  • Prosthodontics
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Public Health Dentistry

"Cosmetic Dentistry" is not a recognised specialty in DHA. Dentists may take continuing education courses in cosmetic work, but it doesn't have its own specialty license.

Red flags when choosing a clinic

  • Dentist claims specialty without DHA-recognised specialty license
  • License number not visible
  • Clinic not willing to explain credentials
  • Pricing that seems unusually low for the work
  • Treatments recommended that seem excessive
  • Pressure to decide same-day on elective work

Green flags

  • DHA license clearly displayed
  • Dentist explains their training and experience openly
  • Before-and-after photos of their own patients
  • Written treatment plans with line items
  • Multi-visit approach for complex work (not rushing to complete)
  • Reviews that mention specific clinicians, not just the clinic

International qualifications

Many Dubai dentists trained abroad. You may see:

  • BDS — Bachelor of Dental Surgery (UK, India, Australia, Pakistan)
  • DDS or DMD — Doctor of Dental Surgery / Medicine (US, Canada)
  • MSc / MS — master's-level specialty training
  • Fellow — elite certification from professional bodies (ICOI, American Board of Periodontology, etc.)

All are recognised by DHA after verification.

Complaint process

If you experience substandard care, DHA has a formal complaint process:

  1. Gather records (treatment notes, x-rays, receipts)
  2. File complaint via DHA's Sheryan system or hotline
  3. DHA investigates, which can lead to fines, suspension, or license revocation

Most patient complaints are best resolved directly with the clinic first. Major issues escalate to DHA.
