Crown vs Veneer for a Front Tooth

Both cover a front tooth — but they serve different purposes. Here's how to choose for a single broken or discoloured front tooth.

Veneer — covers the front

  • Thin shell bonded to the front of the tooth
  • Preserves 70–80% of tooth structure
  • Strong for cosmetic changes
  • Less ideal for large cavities or root-canal teeth

Crown — covers the whole tooth

  • Full coverage, all sides
  • Requires ~1.5 mm of tooth reduction all around
  • Best for root-canal teeth, large fractures, or significant decay
  • Stronger overall protection

When to choose veneer

  • Front tooth with mild discolouration or small chip
  • No root canal
  • Small cavities only
  • Healthy remaining tooth structure

When to choose crown

  • Root canal treatment in the past
  • Large fracture
  • Extensive existing filling
  • Significant structural weakness

Matching — the challenge

Matching a single front crown to its neighbours is harder than matching a veneer. Why: veneers attach bonding to enamel (consistent shade), while crowns have an underlying opaque layer.

Cost in Dubai

  • Single front veneer: AED 2,500–6,000
  • Single front crown: AED 2,800–6,500
