Can Adults Get Braces? Yes — And Here's What to Expect
Over 30% of orthodontic patients in 2026 are adults. Treatment works the same way, just a bit slower. Here's the full picture.

Adult orthodontics is now mainstream
Adults make up approximately 30–35% of orthodontic patients at most Dubai clinics. Advances in aesthetic options (Invisalign, ceramic braces, lingual braces) mean that no one needs to wear visible metal brackets any more.
Does it work the same in adults?
Yes, with one caveat: adult teeth move slightly more slowly because bone is denser and less responsive than in teenagers. A case that would take 18 months in a 14-year-old might take 22 months in an adult. Otherwise, the end result is identical.
Options by age 18–35
- Invisalign: ideal for most; discreet, removable
- Ceramic braces: tooth-coloured brackets, nearly invisible from 1m+
- Lingual braces: fully hidden behind teeth; premium option
- Metal braces: still the most efficient for severe cases
Options by age 35–50
All of the above, plus:
- Short-term orthodontics (Quick Straight Teeth, Inman Aligner): targeted at front-tooth cosmetic corrections only, 4–9 months
- Invisalign Comprehensive remains the most popular option
Options by age 50+
All options still viable if periodontal (gum) health is good. Gum disease must be controlled first — moving teeth in bone affected by active periodontitis risks accelerating bone loss.
Complications more common in adults
Root resorption
Long-term pressure on roots can shorten them slightly. Usually clinically insignificant but monitored with x-rays mid-treatment.
TMJ issues
Adults with existing jaw-joint issues need careful force planning. A good orthodontist screens for this before starting.
Gum recession
Teeth moved outward in narrow bone can cause gum recession. Managed with controlled forces and, if needed, gum grafting.
Slower response
Expect 15–25% longer treatment than teen cases of equivalent complexity.
Hygiene in adult braces
Adults on average have better hygiene than teenagers, but braces make it harder. We recommend:
- Electric toothbrush on sensitive mode
- Interdental brushes (not floss; floss threaders are slow around brackets)
- Water flosser nightly
- Hygiene visits every 3–4 months for the duration of treatment
Cost in Dubai for adults
- Metal braces: AED 8,000–15,000
- Ceramic braces: AED 10,000–18,000
- Invisalign Lite: AED 12,000–17,000
- Invisalign Comprehensive: AED 17,000–28,000
- Lingual braces: AED 25,000–45,000
Most adults go with Invisalign or ceramic braces.
Retention — adults are especially vulnerable
The bite in adults doesn't "settle" as robustly as in teenagers. Lifelong retention is essential — fixed wire behind lower front teeth + nightly removable retainer is the standard adult protocol.
Cosmetic ortho vs comprehensive ortho
Some adults want only front-tooth aesthetic correction. Short-term "cosmetic ortho" can deliver this in 4–9 months. A comprehensive case also fixes the bite — takes longer but usually gives a more stable long-term result.
Our honest advice for adults
Start with a proper specialist consultation that includes photos, x-rays, and 3D scan. If your case is mild and the goal is aesthetic, short-term Invisalign is often enough. If your case is moderate or complex, invest in the comprehensive version. Either way, don't let age stop you — adult ortho is one of the most impactful investments you can make in yourself.
